Day 2: Dumping Excess Baggage

We have a wardrobe full of old beliefs and artefacts from past experiences. We pull them out whenever we get scared about the unknown journey ahead.

Listen to the audio, then do the journaling activity below.

I used to be a shocking over-packer. I’d spend a week or two before a big trip thinking about everything that could go wrong. The panic packing would start a few days before I left. I ripped piles of clothes and gadgets out of my wardrobe and shoved them near my bedroom door – a clear reminder of the perils ahead.

I broke myself out of the habit quite a few years ago. Lugging all the gear around slowed me down and made life that much more difficult. I have become a fan of ultralight packing. On a recent 2-month adventure in South America, I took only 9kg. Yep, I got that on the flight as cabin baggage.

We walk around life in much the same way.

We have a wardrobe full of old beliefs and artefacts from past experiences. We pull them out whenever we get scared about the unknown journey ahead.

Let me give you some examples.

I’m not good enough.

I’m not creative.

Things like that don’t happen to people like me.

I’m not a risk-taker.

I’m not smart enough.

I’m going to fail.

People don’t like me.

It’s too big for me to do.

Do any of these sound familiar?

Your journaling task today…

…is to start a list of all the junky, yucky thoughts you have about yourself. Add to that list all the things you do to undermine yourself.

Keep adding to the list as we go on this adventure together.
